Hana Ra
NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center Federal Volunteer
Hana is the primary developer for "OceanEYEs." A recent graduate of the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Ecology, Evolution, & Conservation (EEC) Biology, she developed the project as a summer intern in the NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center Young Scientist Opportunity (PYSO) Program in 2019. Following the end of her PYSO internship, she continues to work on the OceanEYEs project as a NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center Federal Volunteer.
Dr. Benjamin Richards
NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center - Science Operations Division
Ben serves as Research Fishery Biologist with the Science Operations Division at the NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center. He is the lead scientist for the Bottomfish Fishery-Independent Survey in Hawaii (BFISH) and served as Hana's PYSO mentor as she developed "OceanEYEs". His primary duties are to ensure the scientific integrity of the BFISH survey and to produce reliable estimates of Deep7 bottomfish abundance to inform the Deep7 Stock Assessment. This information is used by mangers to set commercial catch limits in Hawai'i. Ben also served as chair for the NOAA Fisheries Strategic Initiative on Automated Image Analysis, coordinating the team dedicated to teaching computers to count fish and part of NOAA's Community of Practice for Artificial Intelligence.
