Finished! Looks like this project is out of data at the moment!
Why the name ‘Wild Gabon’?
We chose to keep it short but to capture the idea of this project. Gabon (Africa) is the study site of this project which focuses on wild large mammals in a beautiful transitional landscape.
Why isn’t there an “I don’t know” option?
Although we want high confidence in the results of this study, we also want to have an idea of all the animals in the photos and we believe your best guesses will give us clues. Each photo will be identified multiple times by different volunteers, so this should also increase the confidence in identifying animals that are not obvious in some photos.
What should I do if I make a mistake?
If you are still on the photo, you can simply click the ‘cancel’ button next to the orange tag at the bottom of the photo to delete that tag. If you have already submitted your classification, don’t worry, it will be shown to other volunteers. We will then select the animal with the highest classification.
Why are some photos white?
This happens due to overexposure of the image – when the camera flash triggers when there is some light or when the object (animal) is very close to the camera. Unfortunately, this makes the animals in the photo more difficult to identify but don’t worry, just try your best!
How do I know what an animal is doing since this is a photo (not a video)?
We know this could be tricky, this is why the options provided are fairly basic. All you have to do is look at the photo and see what the animal is actively doing and select the options accordingly. You can select all the options that you find appropriate. You do not need to complete separate classifications for animals of the same species performing different behaviors. We have provided more help in the ‘Tutorial’ tab.
What if there are more than one species (i.e. different types of animal) in the photo?
This is possible, although very unlikely. If you come across a photo like this, select the one that is most obvious.
Where were the cameras placed in the landscape?
The cameras were attached to trees at the edge of the forest. They are mounted to capture animals around the edge of the forest because this is the focus of this study.
What if I see an animal that is not on your list?
This is very likely because we are only focused on large mammals. However, we have provided the ‘NO ANIMAL IN PHOTO/OTHERS’ option when you find species that does not fit into any of the other options.
When should I tag Wild Gabon on posts on Twitter and Instagram?
We really want to see how you are getting long and to share in your journey through the Lope forest-savannah mosaic, so please do not hesitate to post photos that you find amazing, outstanding, beautiful and funny. We encourage volunteers to make at least one post – let’s get everyone talking about Wild Gabon!
Can I see how many pictures I have classified?
Yes, you can. Please follow the steps below
i. Use your Wild Gabon log-in information to sign-in to Zooniverse.
ii. Click on your user name in the upper right hand corner and select my profile.
iii. Select the tab “Your Stats”. This will show you all of the classifications that you have done for Wild Gabon and any other Zooniverse projects that you have participated in.
Other questions
If you have other questions about the project head over to the ‘talk’ forum. There you can ask for help or discuss photos with the researchers behind Wild Gabon and fellow Zooniverse members! You are encouraged to send an email to charles.emogor@linacre.ox.ac.uk to share your experience on this project and to make any other general enquires.
