Success!

Wow! I can't believe how fast this went. Thanks to everyone who participated in this project! We'll post more information after analysis of the data happens later this summer.

We are currently out of images, but we'll have more next fall, so check back with us then. In the meantime, you can use the hashtags or the collections to see selected images of animals (and other interesting things in the forest!) found by the project participants.

What is this information going to be used for?

This camera trapping project is providing monitoring of the effects of Sagehen Forest Project treatments in the Sagehen Experimental Forest to reduce fuel loads and catastrophic wildfire danger, while creating better wildlife habitat and preserving water supply and quality.

The project is funded by the Tahoe National Forest, the National Forest Foundation and the Sierra Nevada Conservancy.

Sagehen's monitoring data is used in current research to assess the past and predict future climate and habitat conditions: there are very, very few places in the country (or world) that offer 65+ years of monitoring data to allow us to actually see how things are really changing.

We anticipate that this Zooniverse project will contribute to Sagehen's rich data legacy in the same way.

Cordwood cut at Sagehen in 1889 by Abner Weed, still waiting for a match in 2018. Wood debris in western forests is essentially immortal without healthy, regular, low-intensity fire to clear it out before it builds up and fuels massive, destructive wildfires.
