FAQ

Why are we doing this?

There's some science that just can't be done without help from the community. Thanks for helping us learn more about wildlife in the Sagehen Basin!

FAQs

  • What is Sagehen? And what is this project about? You can learn more about Sagehen and this particular project at the links on the main page. Or visit our website for even more information.
  • How do I participate? There's a tutorial that explains how it works. Just go to the "Classify" link and get started!
  • I can't find the animal in the picture! Not every picture has an animal in it. The cameras can be triggered by things like wind in the leaves, snow falling, or a fast-moving animal that is gone before the camera trips. Check the edges: sometimes just a tail or ear shows up! You can expect to find an animal in about 1:7 images.
  • How can I make it easier to find the animal? Many of the pictures are actually sequences of three images. If there's a play arrow at the bottom left of the picture, use it to move through the image sequence, making changes like a moving animal easy to spot.
  • How do I know what animals are likely to be in the photos? Knowing what the possibilities are will prevent making wildly improbable IDs...like warthog or blue whale 😃 The list of options is a good start on what you are likely to see. Use the "Field Guide" tab on the right side of many of the project's pages to access more detailed species lists for Sagehen.
  • What if I'm sure I'm seeing an animal that's not on the list of options? We have included some generic categories to capture oddball things: "Other animal", "Unidentified animal", etc. You can use these, then add more details in the "Talk" section below the images. Rest assured that your knowledge will be captured!
  • How can I see some of the animals that have already been found? Use hashtags, or the links below the images (on the right side) to add pictures of animals you find to the "Animals!" collection. Here's what's already there.
  • I have more questions! Feel free to post your questions at the "Talk" link and we'll get them answered as soon as possible. If you haven't received an answer after a few days, I might have missed it so send me an email: ffelix@berkeley.edu.
