What is the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center doing with this data?
Once transcription data has been verified, we'll feed it into our digital collections systems the way other text already is; this is the first step toward allowing users to search across handwritten documents on DigitalNC.org.
Are there plans for the future?
Absolutely. This project will help us learn what the challenges are in working with transcription data, and whether we need to adjust our collection methods. Once this project is complete, we'll identify another set of materials to transcribe and build a new project using what we've learned.
