We've upgraded the search indexing systems behind our digital collections; by adding transcribed text we can't recognize electronically, we can allow researchers everywhere to find primary source documents through more than just their metadata.
stephaniewilliams_ncdhcThousands of original historical documents from North Carolina libraries, museums, archives, and other cultural heritage institutions have been digitized and published freely online for the first time at DigitalNC.org. While Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software can do a good job of recognizing typewritten text, handwritten materials need your help! A few minutes of your time will reveal people and places currently "hidden" from search engines. This is a pilot project - if it goes well we'll add more documents based on feedback from volunteers like you.
