





Camera traps are increasingly used in ecological research for monitoring mammal distributions, activity patterns, and species interactions across large spatial and temporal scales. National-scale biodiversity monitoring initiatives such as Snapshot USA can function as powerful educational tools for conveying ecological systems thinking. Embedding real, large-scale ecological datasets in middle school curricula can strengthen students’ understanding of spatial and temporal ecological dynamics, highlight the role of long-term monitoring in conservation, and foster early engagement with evidence-based environmental decision-making.
Here, we present a newly developed, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)-aligned education module framework that integrates camera trap data into middle school (Grades 6–8) instruction to promote ecological reasoning, biodiversity literacy, and conservation awareness.
Using Snapshot USA images captured across the nation, students engage in standardized tasks that require them to compare species’ spatial distributions across land-cover types, interpret temporal activity patterns and evaluate predator–prey overlap, and assess how human presence influences wildlife behavior and habitat use. These activities explicitly mirror analytical approaches used in contemporary mammal ecology while remaining accessible to early learners.
