Finished! Looks like this project is out of data at the moment!
Pop the Champagne, we just turned ONE! 🍾.
365 days, 4 360 Volunteers, 25 540 Videos of Flowers and 143 443 Classifications of Insects
Despite all of the chaos this year has brought, one thing remains certain. How grateful I am for all the citizen scientists who have helped make our work across Buzzy Bee – African Canopy Pollinators. Thank you for every like, follow, classification, question and feedback. Without the information gathered by volunteers, much of the work done to identify insect pollinators of large African timber trees simply would not be possible.
The willingness of participants to join together and work collaboratively has also led to the inclusion in this year's 'Into the Zooniverse' book’ highlighting 20 projects chosen from the more than 150 projects active on the Zooniverse platform in the 2020 – 21 academic year.
The link to the PDF version of the book, as well as details on how to order a hard copy, if of interest, are here: https://www.zooniverse.org/about/highlights
When you classify a video, the first thing that we want to know is if there is any flower visitor even if you can't tell for sure what it was. Sorting out the videos in which there are flower visitors from those in which there are none is already big progress for us! Please make your best guess and choose one of the species / categories from the list, however, we understand that identifying arthropods from videos can be very tricky, even for specialists. That is why there is an "unidentified" and a "too small" button. Click on the "unidentified" button if it seems to you that the floral visitor does not correspond to any of the proposed categories. Click on the "too small" button if the floral visitor is simply too small to provide a correct identification.
Please don't worry about a wrong identification, even your best guess is extremely helpful! Errors are part of the data treatment process and we take into account during later data analysis that it is impossible for everyone to get it "right" every single time. Since several people will classify each video, we will take everyone’s identifications into consideration. When guesses correlate, they tend to be correct! When they don't, we know at least if there was a flower visitor or not and that is already very helpful.
