The Team

Field

The excavation of St James’s Burial ground was just the start of the Field Team’s work to understand the site. A team of 4 senior archaeologists are currently tasked with producing a final report for the site. This includes documentary research, which will be supported by this project, analysis of the layers of archaeology and how they relate to each other, and the overall writing of the report.

Specialists

Our specialist team focus on specific aspects of the archaeological evidence uncovered on the site and delve into it in greater detail to help refine our understanding of the material. Given the nature of the excavations it is perhaps unsurprising that one of the largest groups of specialists currently working on the project are the osteologists looking at the skeletons from the site. Also involved in the analysis are experts in coffin furniture, animal bone, small finds and botanical remains.

Engagement

As part of the archaeological work at St James’s Gardens burial ground there is a substantial program of public engagement being undertaken. This includes public lectures, schools workshops, and exhibitions. There are also projects, like these transcriptions, which offer people local to the development the opportunity to get involved by supporting the research and interpretation of the sites. For more information on these activities see the HS2 and MHI websites.
