New dataset for 2025 has now been launched. Welcome to the Jarrah Forest of Western Australia.
Also, this project recently migrated onto Zooniverse’s new architecture. For details, see here.
The Western Shield team consists of three primary members (Birgus2, Invasive1 and Asho) however the work for this monitoring project could not be achieved without the dedicated help of many people from around the state and the world. Numerous people help with camera deployment and maintenance and those that help out with answering volunteers questions on this project page. A brief summary of just some of those who you might see are provided below.
Dr Michelle Drew — Birgus2 — Western Shield Zoologist, camera guru and the person who tries to help out with your questions when they come up. You will most likely see Michelle as a disembodied boot, arm or leg if you have been classifying the images.
Gareth — Invasive1 — Western Shield Operations Officer and camera guru. Invasive1 is often seen on the cameras and is the unfortunate one often tasked with collecting them in the most unfavourable weather.
Rob — Bait1 — Bait 1 is one of our key volunteers he helps out with the camera deployment and maintenance and is also the person who has the record for the most ticks in any one day!
Beren — the latest member of the team, he has been helping out with the cameras when he can.
Yshish is one of our amazing volunteers who has dedicated her time to learning all of the species on our cameras with high precision. Yshish is usually the first to answer any questions in talk and will ping Birgus2 if she needs clarification.
Aliburchard is one of the Zooniverse team members dedicating to helping us iron out all the wrinkles with uploads and functioning as well as answering questions about alogorithms and summary data.
