If the oldest collections of species endemic to a region were lost, they would be completely irreplaceable. Also, historic collections sampled in the 19th and 20th centuries can be close to useless if we don't know where they were collected. -Dr. Tom Near

About Castaway

Castaway salvages data from the station logs of research vessels operating in the Atlantic from the late 1960’s through the 2010’s. These logs contain information on climate and marine species encountered. Many of these specimens can be found in the research collection of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. By joining us in rescuing this castaway data, you will help our effort to make these irreplaceable snapshots in time, and associated specimens, available to the world. Until now, these data have been locked away in paper archives not accessible to anyone but those who knew of their existence. As the world’s oceans continue to face an uncertain future, these records provide critical historical information to contextualize and more accurately forecast the response of marine species to environmental change. With each transcription that is completed, we increase our resolution of what these vessels encountered, thereby unlocking the true potential of these data.
