Finished! Looks like this project is out of data at the moment!
Thank you for your efforts! We have completed the digitization of the Bozen meteorological record! Click here for more details."
Central Europe has a long tradition of climate monitoring that dates back to before the foundation of modern national weather services. This is true even in the Alps, where the measurements made in the 19th century can tell us how climate evolved in such a geographically complex region. However, these measurements need to be digitized first.
The aim of this project is to key the measurements that were published on contemporary newspapers in the mid-19th century, so that the scientific community can use them. For this we need your help. Even 5 minutes of your time can make a difference!
The digitized data will be used to study naturally-driven climate changes as well as past weather events and will allow a better understanding of natural climate variability. Currently we are digitizing over 30 years (1842-1873) of 3x daily measurements made in Bolzano/Bozen, the capital of South Tyrol in the south-eastern Alps.
The data will be published with open data license, meaning that they will be immediately available to everyone for free and without restrictions. We have already completed the first 8 years, which are available for download at this link.
