Through modern techniques scientists are able to assimilate sparse meteorogical measurements (mainly pressure) from the 19th and early 20th century into numerical weather models and to reconstruct tridimensional fields of several meteorological parameters (so-called reanalyses), which allow them to analyse past weather events in great detail.
For example, we were able to reconstruct the extreme snowfall of December 1916 in the southeastern Alps, one of the deadliest weather events in European history:
