FAQ

LABELING QUESTIONS

What if I don't know how to label something?

If you are unsure how to label a specific image, then there are many places to look for help:

  • The Tutorial
  • The "NEED SOME HELP WITH THIS TASK?" Section
  • The Field Guide
  • The Talk Page
If you are still confused, then feel free to skip the image. (Or, choose "Unsure" if this is an option.) It is better to leave the image unlabeled than to label it unconfidently.

What if I make a mistake?

Don't worry if you accidentally submit something incorrectly. Many people will be labeling each image, and the labels will be reviewed before we use them.

How tightly should I draw my polygons?

Err on the side of too tight instead of too loose. We are looking to get the most accurate predictions, as we will be looking at every pixel in the region you label.

PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

Who will benefit from this work?

COSMIC is run by JPL/NASA scientists and will be used to create an image classifier to perform classifications onboard future orbiters similar to the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). These classifications will be used to optimize how we send images back to scientists on Earth. So, this work will benefit anyone who values planetary science!

How will you use my labels?

We will use your labels to train a pixel-based, machine learning image classifier. The pixels in the regions you identify will guide our algorithms in classifying the pixels in new images when they are taken on Mars.

How is this different from Planet Four?

This workflow is different from Planet Four's in that it involves identifying regions of interest to support machine learning that will facilitate science, rather than identifying science parameters themselves.
