This archive and its contents are field recordings and are not for sale, or for redistribution. While the recordings and documents contained here may have only personal value, we would prefer that they not be taken out of context. Thank you for respecting the rights of the people who made these recordings and wrote the songs, instrumentals, spoken word pieces and articles collected here. This archive is dedicated to all the people who preserve the experience of live filk music, but most of all to Harold Stein and Chris "Keris" Croughton.
Filk is the music native to science fiction conventions. It spans a wide variety of conventional genres, but filk is defined by what people choose to perform in filk circles.
A filk circle is the traditional way in which people share their new songs and play old favorites, by sitting in chairs around a room and sharing songs in a variety of styles. For more information, please see The Filk FAQ.
Things happen in filk circles that frequently don't happen on stage at science fiction conventions. There's wild improvisation, and unique collaborations. You never know what will happen.
Most of these recordings will probably have people singing, and performing, but you'll also hear story telling, joking, applause and even silence. Sometimes there will be unnecessary noises. All these are accounted for in our filtration process.
Many filkers collect and collate their own songbooks. A lot of these songsheets and songbooks were collected by Harold Stein, and many of them are in need of identification. In the long run, we're hoping to OCR or transcribe the songs onto a service like Genius.com where people can comment and annotate and add their own stories about the songs.
