Jan 9, 2026 - Welcome to Space Umbrella! Check out our latest announcements and the results from our beta test.
This project is led by researchers from Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and the Southwest Research Institute and funded by a NASA Citizen Science Seed Funding Program Grant (#80NSSC25K7015).
Dr. Wenli Mo is a researcher at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, USA. She is the lead of the Space Umbrella project. Her research involves applying data science and machine learning to tackle problems in heliophysics, planetary science, and astrophysics. In her free time, she enjoys visiting national parks and playing violin.
Dr. Vicki Toy-Edens is a researcher at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, USA. She is a data scientist and research software engineer that loves to analyze any and all data from space. She loves The Office and has trekked to Scranton, PA to pay homage.
Dr. Sarah Vines is a Lead Scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, USA. She focuses largely on solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere interactions, including processes at the Earth's magnetopause, and magnetic field instrumentation. With bodies of water for rowing and coxing being a little harder to come by in San Antonio, she has expanded her collection of cacti and succulents, and is still captivated by carnivorous plants. Sarah also loves to dance and sing loudly with her daughter, who has already contributed her presence to several scientific meetings.
Dr. Robert C. Allen is a Lead Scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, USA. His research experience includes comprehensive studies of plasma origin and subsequent evolution and acceleration in the magnetospheres of Venus, Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus, investigations on electromagnetic ion cyclotron wave generation and propagation in the Earth’s outer magnetosphere, and particle acceleration within the solar wind due to large scale structures. Outside of work, Robert enjoys cooking, running, listening/dancing to his vinyl collection with his daughter, and seeing live music of almost any genre (especially local music at small venues).
