Help us to find flora & fauna in artwork from the Rijksmuseum
Learn moreThis project will contain two main workflows. In this first step we let you enjoy many works from the collection of paintings and you can point out if any animals, trees or plants are present in the images, in basic categories like fish, mammals, plants, birds, reptiles or amphibia. Once this first shifting has taken place, we'll dive deeper and with your help will try to define the specific species on each work of art.

A lot is still unknown about how the natural world has been impacted by humans over time. Paintings are interesting to explore in this regard as they can reveal biological and cultural aspects of the historical interaction between man and nature. This project will open up large collections of art to researchers studying biodiveristy in a historical perspective.
ATHENA: Spot Species in Fine ArtThe wide collection of paintings and drawings of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam contains many plants and animals. To learn more about how, where and when species were depicted we need your help to identify and classify them. The project includes many master pieces of the 16th century up to modern times. By classifying these paintings, you contribute to the project of ATHENA and help us build our portal documenting the history of the flora and fauna of the Netherlands.
