FAQ

Why isn’t there an “I don’t know” button?

We left out the 'I don't know' button because we really want your best guess! We know sometimes you are looking at a blurred smudge just leaving the frame, but please do have a go. Each photo will be assessed by several people, and collectively those guesses can tell us if the animal is large or small, or light or dark. Furthermore, if a majority of guesses are telling us that that blurred smudge is a capuchin monkey, then it probably is a capuchin monkey. Humans are excellent at processing partial information, and we think you'll be surprised at how little of an animal you have to see to identify it, after some practice! If an animal really is impossible to identify, then we'll be able to tell from the random looking guesses, and flag these for an expert to look at.

Not having an 'I don't know' button also means that we don't have to show you all the tricky images that other people could not identify - it is making your life easier in the end! If you're still not convinced, check out what our friends at Snapshot Serengeti say about not needing an "I don't know" button.

I think I made a mistake, can I go back?

No, you can’t go back, but don’t worry! We always show the same photo to multiple people, so your answer will be combined with the answers of other volunteers. After showing the image to many people, wrong answers will get outweighed by many correct answers.

Why there are some pictures without any animals? Am I so bad detecting them?

First, remember to look for a play icon at the bottom left of the picture. That will play a sequence and an animal may appear. If you don't see the play button, there are no further images.

The cameras are triggered by any moving object that is a different temperature to the background. Sometimes an animal activates the sensor but runs or flies out of shot too quickly, or moving vegetation or patches of sunlight activate the sensor. Just select 'Nothing here' and move on!

Why is there a play button on the bottom left of some images?

We set up our camera traps to take three pictures in a row, so instead of uploading individual pictures, in which it is sometimes difficult to detect the animals, we give you a sequence, so you can see how an animal moves between frames - this makes finding and identifying the animals much easier. Sometimes the cameras don't work perfectly and just take one or two pictures.

I want to tell the scientists about something in the image
Yes, we want to hear about animals with radio collars, hunters with guns, domestic animals, animals with injuries, interesting behaviors, or anything else out of the ordinary. Check the 'Something interesting' box when you identify the animal. If you want to tell us more, click the 'Talk' button and tag the picture with the hashtag #interesting and we will look at it ASAP! We also have the 'cool photo' box to tick for great photos.

I am looking at an animal that doesn't appear in your list

Check the list and make sure that it doesn't fall in wider "snake" "rat" or "bird" categories. If you are still sure that is not on the list, do your best to select the most similar one and check the 'Something interesting' box. To tell us more, go to the 'Notes' section in Talk and tag the pic with the hashtag #newspecies. (https://www.zooniverse.org/projects/rainforestexpeditions/amazoncam-tambopata/talk/683). We will do our very best to let you know what it is!

I've got other questions, and some cool suggestions to improve this project!
Let's Talk!

I'd like to learn more about Wired Amazon and the people and organizations behind it
Glad you asked! Please visit the Wired Amazon website for more information, and to find out how you can earn Travel Credits to visit the Amazon rainforest in person!

I know the species, but the only choice is a broad category (like 'bird (other)' or 'lizard'). Is there a way to record the species name?
Yes. Please do! First identify the broad category, then click the “Talk” button and tag the photo with the hashtag #additional-id and the species that you think it is. Thanks!

Are the images in chronological order?
No, the images appear in random order.

How can I see the results of this survey?
We will link to our results and news on these pages when available.

How can I ask a question that’s not in this FAQ?
Please do leave us questions in the Talk forum. We will answer as many questions as we can, and the more experienced Zooniverse volunteers also know the answers to many questions. Please do get involved!
