There is so much we can learn about giant star forming clumps in galaxies! But before we can answer the big science questions we first need to know which galaxies have clumps and then where are the clumps within a clumpy galaxy.

Sobre Galaxy Zoo: Clump Scout II

One of the big questions in galaxy evolution is why there are very few galaxies with clumpy structure in the local Universe when they were so common in the past. In this project, we are taking advantage of new tools - more powerful telescopes and machine learning - to more deeply investigate the enigmatic nature of giant star-forming clumps. As the name implies, we know these clumps are related to star formation, but how? Are the star formation processes that produce clumps in nearby galaxies the same as in the early Universe?

Volunteers in the first Galaxy Zoo: Clump Scout project helped to find a large sample of these local clumpy galaxies. In this project we hope to learn more about the detailed shapes and substructure of these clumps. We now need your help to check and, if necessary, correct the predictions made by a machine learning model on what it thinks are clumps.
