Finished! Looks like this project is out of data at the moment!

We have finished our current slate of annotations - thank you Explorers! See our full message for more details on Talk.

FAQ

FAQ

Where do these photos come from?
These photos come from saltmarshes from Altamaha, Doboy, Sapelo on the coast of Georgia and are taken by using an carriage that suspends a camera between two bicycles.

What are will these annotations be used for?
The annotations will help us identify the location, abundance and the relationships between different salt marsh species. This information would be used in our machine learning models to map the relationships which will show us how the species affect each other in the ecosystem.

What if there is nothing to annotate in the photos?
Every photo will not have anything in it to be annotated and you can just press continue since some photos will not have any subjects of interest present.

Why is there so many photos that have no crabs or snails?
A lot of the photos are taken in quick successions as the carriage is being moved so there are areas where there may not be any crabs or snails there during that time.

What if I'm not sure if I'm annotating a photo correctly due to blurriness?
Don't worry and try your best at annotating it. We understand that some photos are unclear or look ambiguous. Each photo will be analyzed by multiple volunteers which will help filter out incorrect data.

Do I have to annotate dead snails or crabs in the photos?
It's okay to annotate dead snails and crabs since those may be hard to differentiate from live ones. If you can see that they're obviously dead (parts of shells) then you do not have to annotate those.

What are some future plans for this project?
We are planning to expand our subjects of interest and add another workflow for saltmarsh plants that may be more advanced for our volunteers. This will also allow us to explore the location of the plants with the crabs and snails.

What if I have a question that is not answered by the tutorial, field guide or FAQ?
You can click on the "Talk" button on the top of a page to view the questions asked by other citizen scientists. If your question is still unanswered, you can create a new discussion on the bottom of the page. We will be checking for any questions and attempting to answer any questions.
