Finished! Looks like this project is out of data at the moment!

Thanks to the work of more than 1800 of you, we've completed the first stage of the project! We're going through the results now and will have new workflows for you to help with in the coming months.

Results

The initial goal of Unearthing Michigan Ecological Data is to supplement the metadata, or descriptive information, for these papers that live in Deep Blue, the University of Michigan's institutional repository. This metadata will assist researchers who are looking at the many different aspects of the state's ecology, both by helping them more quickly assess the relevance of a particular paper for their research as well as enabling the integration of the work included in these papers into longer-term studies.

After aggregating the more than 320,000 classifications, we were able to update the following number of documents in Deep Blue:

Diagram = 1225 documents
Map = 1500 documents
Graph = 2283 documents
Photo = 350 documents
Table = 3266 documents

The total number of unique documents that had at least one field updated was 3640, out of approximately 4000 total documents.

Previous Update

As of September 1, your efforts have yielded the following results. In terms of the total types of data identified, volunteers have found the following:

Diagrams + Illustrations = 1028
Graphs = 2120
Maps = 2552
Other = 982
Photographs = 466
Species Listed = 7070
Tables of Numbers = 3549

These results were derived from page images that received five classifications and were retired (or no longer seen by volunteers) and had at least four different people agree that it contained a particular type of data, which was calculated using Zooniverse's Panoptes aggregation data processing package.

Using the same methodology, we also calculated the initial number of papers in Deep Blue that will be updated, as well as what elements will be added to these papers' metadata.

Diagrams + Illustrations = 459
Graphs = 773
Maps = 609
Photographs = 161
Tables of Numbers = 1352

As we continue to move closer to completing the project, we will update these numbers with more recent results! After completing the first phase of the project, we will move on to looking at specific research questions, and develop further workflows, including transcribing specific information within these papers, so keep an eye out for more opportunities to help us!
