With your help, we can use museum collections to ask how and why birds became so colourful.

About Project Plumage

We are photographing specimens of virtually all 10,000 living bird species in both the human visible and ultraviolet spectrum to better understand avian colour diversity and evolution.

Using the incredible collections of the Natural History Museum, London, we are building the most comprehensive database of animal colour information ever compiled and to do this we need your assistance.

By helping us locate key areas on photographs of museum specimens, you will be providing essential information needed to accurately measure the colour of birds. This information will directly contribute to furthering our understanding of the spectacular diversity of colour in nature.
