The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) is a governmental research organization operating under the supervision of the General Secretariat For Research And Innovation (GSRI) of the Ministry of Development and Investments (MDI). HCMR comprises three Research Institutes: the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology, and Aquaculture (IMBBC), the Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters (IMBRIW), and the Institute of Oceanography (IO).
The IMBBC addresses all levels of biological diversity in the marine realm, from genes to ecosystems and from microbes to metazoans, for ecological and biotechnological purposes.
The Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) serves as the coordination and information platform for marine scientific research in Flanders. VLIZ is a central hub for marine and coastal-related research and plays a significant role as an international contact point. VLIZ collaborates with Flemish research groups and administrations and is actively engaged in national and international networks. Key activities include the management of the Flanders Marine Data and Information Centre (VMDC), the Infodesk, the Sea Library, and the research vessel 'Simon Stevin.'
The VMDC, a division within VLIZ, acts as a service center that makes high-quality data and information accessible to a wide range of marine scientists while implementing a FAIR and Open data policy. VMDC is accredited as an IODE National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC) and is also recognized as a regular member of the World Data System (WDS).
