RAINFALL RESCUE HAS FINISHED BUT YOU CAN VOLUNTEER FOR THE WEATHER RESCUE PROJECT TO CONTINUE IMPROVING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF HISTORICAL WEATHER AND CLIMATE

FAQ

Why are we rescuing this weather data?
Learning more about the weather relies on having detailed observations, but the further back in time we look the rarer these observations become. However, not all of the observations taken in the past have been digitised. This project aims to 'rescue' a comprehensive set of monthly measurements of rainfall taken across the UK between the 1820s and the 1950s so that we can better map and understand the weather during this period. This was before the world started to warm rapidly so these old measurements provide a baseline from which to measure any changes to the weather.

How did they measure the rainfall?
The rainfall was measured in inches, normally using a standard 'Snowdon' rain gauge.

Will the data be made available?
Certainly. As soon as it has been processed and checked, we will make the data freely available for anyone to use.

Who is funding this project?
The National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and the University of Reading, using images made available by the UK Met Office.
