Frequently Asked Questions

In this section you will find a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ). This page will be updated as we get more questions and as the project evolves.

What will happen with the data I contribute?

We will use your labels to fine-tune a machine learning classifier (a Deep Convolutional Neural Network) that Rubin Observatory will use to confidently identify astrophysical transients, variables, and moving objects. Your data will help the classifier learn more information about the different phenomena that Rubin will see. Each public alert sent by Rubin will include a score from the classifier trained from this project!

What if I am not sure how to label something?

There are many places to look for help:

  • The Tutorial
  • The Field Guide
  • The Talk Page: here you will find the team and Zooniverse participants who are more than happy to help you!

What if I make a mistake?

Don't worry about it! We will be using multiple users' labels to classify each subject. Subjects that users disagree about are some of the most important!

Why do some subjects pop up feedback messages?

We've interspersed a few training objects along the way to help users as they get started.

What is the small line in the lower left of each image?

This line is a scale bar of length 1.0 arcseconds. Real objects will be larger than 0.5 arcsecond or so.
