About Serengeti Wildebeest Count

Scientists have flown over and systematically photographed the 2018 Serengeti wildebeest and zebra migration.

This herd of wildebeest, estimated in 2013 to number around 1.3 million, annually migrates to form the largest land mammal migration on earth.

A estimate of the wildebeest population is completed by counting the number of wildebeest and zebra in a large number of images.

This is where you come in. Counting the animals in the photos is slow and time consuming - increasing the number of people counting greatly speeds up the process.

By using volunteers to count the wildebeest here online, we can get an estimate count quickly and accurately. This research is led by the Tanzania Wildlife Research Insititute (TAWIRI) and the results will be used to help in the monitoring and conservation of the Serengeti wildebeest herd.
