The Team

Tom Bilson

Head of Digital Media

Tom is responsible for establishing and directing the digitisation project and the decision to involve volunteers as closely as possible with every activity, from photography to cataloguing and conservation. It’s almost impossible to pick a favourite image, but one of his favourite collections are several hundred photographs transferred to the library by the UK’s Ministry of Works. Taken by soldiers, historians and architects across Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands during the last months of WW2, they depict bomb damage alongside programmes of surveying and rebuilding, and also celebrate the women and men who took photographs so that it might never be forgotten. With a degree in Natural Sciences, his love of photography goes back to mending a broken Victorian plate camera as a child and taking its first photograph for perhaps a hundred years.

Faye Fornasier

Digitisation, Database, and Cataloguing Manager

Faye has been working full time on the digitisation project since it started in 2017, designing and managing the digitisation and cataloguing tasks. She also created this Zooniverse project. A UCL postgraduate with background in literature and film studies, Faye is interested in those pictures in the collection that feature people interacting with the architecture and inhabiting urban spaces. "In many Italian cities, and especially in Venice, where buildings haven't changed much since Canaletto, people provide historical context, and immediately inspire narratives and reverie".
