The Team

Ana Margarida Dias da Silva


AMDS holds a PhD in Information Science in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra, research fundeded by the FCT [SFRH/BD/132115/2017]. She holds a Master in Information and Documentation Sciences, specialization in Archives, of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the New University of Lisbon. She is a researcher of the Center for the History of Society and Culture (CHSC, University of Coimbra. She is archivist at the Life Sciences Department of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra.

António Carmo Gouveia


ACG holds a PhD in Ecology from the University of Coimbra and was a visiting student at Stanford University. ACG is co-PI of the research line History and Communication of Science in the R&D unit Centre for Functional Ecology and a fellow at the UNESCO Chair in Biodiversity Safeguard for Sustainable Development, working closely within the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries universities and institutions.

Helena Freitas


She is Chair Holder and General Coordinator of the UNESCO Chair in Biodiversity Safeguard for Sustainable Development. HF is the scientific coordinator of the Centre for Functional Ecology. She holds a PhD in Ecology from the University of Coimbra, in collaboration with the University of Bielefeld, Germany, and she was a Post-Doc at the University of Stanford, USA. She is Full Professor in the fields of Biodiversity and Plant Ecology at the Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra.

Joana Cabral Oliveira


She is Chair Manager and Researcher of the UNESCO Chair in Biodiversity Safeguard for Sustainable Development. She holds a PhD in biology, in the field of marine ecology. JCO has worked in the Science Museum of Coimbra, and has participated in various science communication projects.

Joaquim Miguel Santos


He studied Biology at the University of Coimbra, where he obtained his degree in 2003. He started working in ecology related projects in the earlier years of his career, and moved after to the area Biological collections and Data science. He participated on several projects in this area, namely the Digitization of the Herbarium of the University of Coimbra, Digitization of Botanical Library and Archive, The Halophytes Database, among others. Along the way he has worked also in Science Education projects. In 2018 completed an MSc. in Ecology with the dissertation "Accelerating Digitisation of Biological Collections for Fast Ecological Information Retrieval" , which involved the development of a Citizen Collaborative platform for Coimbra Herbarium.

M. Teresa Gonçalves


She is an Assistant professor at the University of Coimbra (UC), teaching at the Department of Life Sciences. She holds a PhD in Plant Physiology and is a researcher at the R&D unit Centre for Functional Ecology. Her research interests focuses on the ecology of mycorrhizal fungi and also on the history of botany in the University of Coimbra. Since a few years, she is the coordinator of the Botany Archive of the UC.

Teresa Girão


She has been dedicated to a career in science communication, consulting and management. She is currently researcher at the Science Museum, University of Coimbra. She has previously worked as a science communication manager at the Botanic Garden, and as an exhibition developer at the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra. She was the science communication officer for the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, and the director of the Junior Science Centre at Biocant – Biotechnology Innovation Center. She holds a Ph.D. in Biochemical Technology, and post-doctoral training in Neuroscience.
