Your contribution is crucial in helping us gather accurate data to protect our rivers and environment. Thank you for your participation!
This project has been built using the Zooniverse Project Builder but is not yet an official Zooniverse project. Queries and issues relating to this project directed at the Zooniverse Team may not receive any response.
Participants are invited to verify the accuracy of predictions made by Computer Vision models.
There are several ways to contribute. You may choose to respond to straightforward Yes/No validation questions, or engage more deeply by examining the original images to identify and tag objects that may have been missed by the detection algorithms.
The nature of the task will vary depending on the complexity of object recognition in each case. Participants are encouraged to engage with all available task types to support comprehensive model evaluation.
Some tasks will also include data collected via drones. This is part of the RiverWatchers initiative, which operates in parallel with the WasteWatchers project (https://blog.vito.be/remotesensing/wastewatchers) —an effort that uses drone imagery to monitor riverbanks.

The RiverWatchers project (https://www.river-cleanup.org/nl/project/river-watchers) is an exciting citizen science initiative that empowers individuals to help tackle riverine litter using their smartphones (and drones). By participating, citizens can photograph litter along the banks of rivers, contributing valuable data to an AI system that identifies and categorizes macro- and mesoplastics. This innovative approach not only raises awareness about the environmental impact of plastic pollution but also provides crucial information to policymakers for implementing effective measures.
Unlike previous Zooniverse projects that focused on beach litter, RiverWatchers targets the riverine environment, capturing data on various items such as PET bottles, metal drinkcans, cigarette butts, plastic bags, plastic pellets and many more.
By joining RiverWatchers, you become part of a community dedicated to preserving our rivers and protecting biodiversity. Your contributions will help create a cleaner, healthier environment for all. Let's make a difference together! 🌍📸
