Help Identify Sounds in the Endangered Turtle's Ecosystem! Starting with the Winged Ones!
Learn moreListen to and identify the sounds of Minnesota birds collected from two field sites: (1) Mound Springs sacred site along the MN River Valley part of MN Valley National Wildlife Refuge, and (2) Crow-Hassan restored prairie about 35 miles NW of metro Mpls.
There will be specific birds to identify by their sound. You will focus on one species at a time. Your task will be fun: Do you hear the bird? Choose a species you’re interested in, or do some of each! Everyone welcome!

From the lead teacher at South High School, "Students (researchers) feel a strong commitment to caring for the land, water, animals, and plants. They felt motivated to study and learn so they could gain the knowledge needed to participate in restoration work...including listening to the voices of birds & frogs."

Turtles are the sentinels for this research project, designed to connect people with nature, in this case, through the life of a turtle. Since all life is interconnected, we are enabling learning about turtles and their ecosystem. The project characterizes the soundscapes turtles live within and uses this as a bridge to explore the co-existing birds, frogs, bats, and anthropogenic sounds.
The main goal is to identify species present in the bioacoustics data of our research project, with a preliminary emphasis on birds. Some of the data has been processed using AI, so one question is: how accurate is the AI model compared to volunteers and scientists?
