Help us collect historical information about fish biodiversity

About Fishing in the past

We selected paintings from the rijksmuseum and rkd of Dutch painters from 1500 until 1700 on which at least one fish is pictured. This collection includes paintings from famous painters such as Breughel and Jan Steen. Please help us identify the species. This will give us historical information about the availability of commercial fish, biodiversity and common practice of Dutch painters. Our interdisciplinary research team exists of biologists and humanities scientists from naturalis and Lucas. Together we are investigating the role of ichthyology in the past.
