This project was built from Galaxy Zoo data to serve as an introduction to crowdsourcing and people powered research for post-secondary Astronomy 101 courses to be able to work together and compare classifications with their class and the Galaxy Zoo volunteers. First, all students will classify these 22 galaxies before attending class, and with this specially built Galaxy Zoo project you then will be able to demonstrate in class how Astronomers have taken the results from classifications to determine what the galaxy type is. You will also be able to explore how your classifications compared to the class and the Galaxy Zoo volunteers.
In Galaxy Zoo, to understand how galaxies formed we need volunteer help to classify them according to their shapes. Our volunteers have been able to do more than just classify galaxies, some volunteers have become part of the research team or discovered new objects Astronomers have never studied before.
