About Soviet Names in German Military Records

This project aims to systematically identify Soviet military personnel and civilians mentioned in German military records from World War II.

German records contain interrogations of prisoners of war and defectors, intelligence reports, lists, reports concerning the civilian population, and many other documents in which Soviet individuals are named. Much of this information remains difficult to discover through conventional archival searches.

By examining these documents, you can help create a searchable index of these personal references and link each identified person to the original archival document.

You do not need to translate entire documents. Record only the information you can reliably read, such as a person’s name, age or year of birth, place of birth, military unit, and source. Even a single name may lead a family or researcher to a previously unknown document.
