Finished! Looks like this project is out of data at the moment!

Great work, everyone! We finished classifying all the images we had but we'll have more in the fall. Stay tuned!

The Team

The Live Plant Photo database is a collaboration of more than 150 botanists and natural historians working in Neotropical rainforests. It was originally developed to facilitate the identification of plant specimens from the New World tropics. Founded by legendary botanist Robin Foster, who took nearly half of the photos himself, the Live Plant Photo database include Neotropical plants from South America (65%), Central America (32%), and the Caribbean (2%). The database is now managed by the conservation tools team at the Field Museum’s Keller Science Action Center.

Dr. Nigel Pitman
Nigel is an ecologist and conservationist with a special interest in South American forests. His research focuses on Amazonian tree ecology, but he has also worked on the endemic floras of Ecuador and Peru, long-term trends in Amazonian animal abundances, and extinction risks in South American plants. He has been working with the Museum's rapid inventory team since 2001 and has taken part in seven inventories in Ecuador and Peru. He currently coordinates the conservation tools program in the Museum's Keller Science Action Center.

Dr. Tomomi Suwa
Tomomi has a background in the ecology and evolution of plants. She joined the Keller Science Action Center at the Field Museum in 2017. One of the most important aspects of her job is to organize and archive plant images in a database and to make them accessible to anybody who's interested in plants.

Peter Mason
Peter started out as a volunteer for Fossil Finder Project, one of the Zooniverse projects and ended up creating their tutorial, field guide, and help files. Since then, he has taught himself enough Python to analyse the data for that project and has became heavily involved in several projects including Snapshots-at-sea, Amazon-aerobotany and Interior least tern and piping plover predators. As an experienced Zooniverse user and project builder, he provides great insights and is very active in the Zooniverse Project Building and Data Processing forums. He maintains a section of the Zooniverse data digging Git intended to help smaller projects manage their own data analysis using easy to modify Python scripts.
