Stomata regulate the gas exchange of plants. They are only as big as the diameter of a human hair but key for photosynthesis in plants.
sofie.meeusThe Leaf Prints project aims to collect stomata size data from many different plant species. The microscope pictures presented in this project are derived from well-conserved herbarium material from the Democratic Republic of the Congo dating back to the early 1900s. The use of these measurements is twofold as they will be used to train our algorithm to automatically measure stomata but also for the purpose of studying the physiological response of tropical trees to climate change.
This project was made possible with the support of the Belgian Science Policy Office (Congo basin eco-climatological data recovery and valorization; contract no. BR/175/A3/COBECORE) and the Botanic Garden Meise.
