About Sajjad Zaheer Photo Archive

Syed Sajjad Zaheer (1905-1973) was an Urdu litterateur and political activist. His archive documents his personal life, his writing, his membership in the Progressive Writers Association and the Afro-Asian Writers Conference, and his involvement with the Communist Parties of India and Pakistan. Since 2014, the University of Texas at Austin, Ambedkar University Delhi, and the South Asia Materials Project at the Center for Research Libraries have collaborated with members of the Zaheer family to digitize these materials. The Sajjad Zaheer archive is now freely and openly available to the public. The photographs presented here are just one part of this collection. While earlier efforts at description have provided some information about these photographs, many of the people and places remain unidentified and the dates are unknown. With your help to identify people, places, and dates, this project will provide additional contextual information and description. This information will help scholarly researchers, students, family members, and anyone interested to gain a more in-depth understanding of Zaheer and North Indian life in the twentieth century.
