FAQ

I will add to this section as FAQ become available.
Ask questions in the discussion boards (called TALK in the menu) or via email r.cubey@rbge.org.uk and to mariabaden@biology.sdu.dk

  • What to do with var. names?
Enter all letters in the species field regardless of whether it is followed / preceded by var. subsp. or form. For example if you see wardii var. wardii enter the entire string, indicating any line break with pushing the insertion button, and also omitting the punctuation, so if all is written in one row it looks like: wardii var wardii and if there was a line-break as in the linked example above if would look like: wardii[insertion][/insertion]var wardii

  • Is it just me or do the instructions make many tasks appear a lot more complicated than they actually are?
It is not you. Since our common goal here is to train a machine, I am taking decisions as the middle woman between our machine teacher who is coding the algorithm, and the human observers who collectively build this training dataset needed to go along with the code to teach the machine to read. I need to assume the machine is a lot less flexible than the human brain. But having said that, I need to also train myself in understanding how smart we can hope the machine to become. So we are working on this, and I am certainly in favor of reducing the amount of instructions to you, because it is in fact, mostly a really simple task. Just that from my experience of test-driving the code book, there have been so many exceptions and thus I wanted to build rules to accommodate these exceptions. Thankfully this is the beta version and all your frustrations will not be in vain as we try to improve, ie reduce & simplify this!

  • This insertion business is way too complicated - do I leave all the bracketed insertion text or how should this look
We utterly agree! Having to sift through the looks of this [insertion][/insertion] business is taxing to the eye and we are actively searching for a better way of doing this. At the moment, we are using this inbuilt text option to tell the machine to look for the next piece of text in the row below. Currently, correctly transcribed examples look like this:
Ex 1, Ex 2, Ex 3 If anyone has experience with any additional functionality built into zooniverse we are not aware of that could solve this please do get in touch (emails above, or TALK menu, perhaps TECH topic)
