Previous research on hawk vocalizations has been limited to what is audible from the ground or during a nest check. The hawk cam gives you the chance to document vocalizations right at the nest for the entire season—without disturbing the birds!
Rachael_CornellJoin the Bird Cams Lab to document Red-tailed Hawk behavior and vocalizations using clips from a 24/7 camera at a Red-Tailed Hawk nest on Cornell University's campus. The Bird Cams Lab is a new project from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, funded by the National Science Foundation. The project aims to connect cam viewers with researchers in an online space to "co-create" scientific investigations, involving viewers in every step of the scientific process: observing, questioning, collecting and analyzing data, and sharing results.
After weeks of observing and discussing, the community of Beta participants voted on a question for investigation:
Do the hawks use different kinds of calls in different situations at the nest?”
We will start by looking at the first week of footage after the nestlings start hatching. Join in to not only collect data, but to participate in the talk forums as we continue to co-create this investigation.
