About The Prairie Project

The Prairie Project is a long-term investigation into the use of prescribed fire and livestock grazing to restore the prairie of Texas' Edwards Plateau. We burn areas in our study site annually. Meanwhile, cattle, sheep, and goats graze across the entire ranch. Our cameras allow us to monitor animal activity between burned and unburned sites and within three vegetation communities: grass-, brush-, and tree-dominated. We also use GPS-receiver collars to trace livestock movements. Photographs of collared individuals allow us to ensure the collars are calibrated correctly.

We're reaching out to citizen scientists to help us process our large and continually growing dataset. Your task is to identify animal species in photographs, their behaviors, and report collared individuals. Your contribution will help us discover in what ways the dynamic interactions of fire and grazing can restore prairie landscapes, promote biodiversity, and sustain livestock production in the southern Great Plains!
