“To ensure that Wales remains a green and pleasant place land we need to support essential pollinators such as bees by providing them with much need food in the form of wild flowers. Lack of forage is a particular issue in urban environments were access to green spaces is limited. With your help we will use the Spotabee app to survey local bee numbers and to identify sites which would benefit from the introduction of more wild flowers.” - Professor Les Baillie
Pharmabees Spot-a-BeeOur Pharmabees team specialize in cutting edge research exploring how the pollination of certain plants could lead to the development of drugs to treat serious medical conditions now resistant to traditional antibiotics - otherwise known as 'superbugs'.
In order to do this we need to be able to track different pollinators and what plants they visit. So we developed the Spot-A-Bee app, using this members of the public can take a picture whilst out and about and upload it to help develop a map of where bees are and what they are feeding on.
This zooniverse project aims to identify the bee species in these pictures, giving us a clearer understanding of feeding habits and populations.
The data will be used to shape our future projects, including community driven greener projects across Wales.
