This project is a first step in testing a combination of crowdsourcing and artificial intelligence (AI) for making the League of Nations archive accessible online. Participants initially digitize the title, document symbol as well as provide the date and language of the document. We want to test the accuracy of crowdsourcing for documents that are often difficult to decipher with OCR. In future, the data from this project will be used to train machine learning models, to do this automatically.

About League of Nations in the Digital Age

The documents in the archives of the League of Nations contain important historical information about the origins of the United Nations that are relevant to understanding the UN and its many roles today. Because the data has been kept in the form of paper archives at the UN Library in Geneva, the digital preservation of the documents represents an important challenge. Digitization of these archives will enable far wider access to important historical documents, currently only accessible to researcher who can visit the archives in person.
