The Team

The Marine Remote Sensing Group (MRSG) (https://mrsg.aegean.gr/) in the University of the Aegean conducting research for the exploration, analysis, and visualization of the satellite and UAV data in the coastal environment. We combine state of the art algorithms and in situ measurements to develop new methods, technologies, and products for the visual representation of marine geospatial information. The group has gain expertise in several disciplines of marine remote sensing including oil spill detection, oceanic phenomena identification, seagrass mapping, coastal bathymetry, and coastline detection.

Our team consists of various members (Professors, Post-doc, Ph.D. students, Researchers) specialized in different disciplines in the fields of remote sensing, geoinformatics, cartography, UAV. We have worked and collaborated on various research projects. More info about the projects can be found here https://mrsg.aegean.gr/.

The University of the Aegean (UAegean) was founded in 1984 aiming to introduce new approaches in higher education in Greece and worldwide and to promote regional development. Situated in 6 picturesque islands in the Aegean Archipelago, the UAegean offers a unique natural, cultural and human environment for modern studies in the ancient cradle of knowledge.

Our team members are:

Dr. Konstantinos N. Topouzelis (@topouzelis)

Dr. Konstantinos Topouzelis is an assistant professor in the Department of Marine Sciences, University of the Aegean and he is leading the Marine Remote Sensing Group. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies (the University of the Aegean, Department of Environment), a Master's degree in Remote Sensing (the University of Dundee, Department of Applied Physics & Mechanical Engineering), and a Ph.D. in pollution monitoring from space (the National Technical University of Athens, School of Rural and Surveying Engineering).

His main research interest is on the analysis of remote sensing datasets, including satellite and aerial images, for marine and coastal applications. His expertise includes automatic detection of oceanographic phenomena, Object-Based Image Analysis, image processing algorithms, and coastal mapping.

Dr. Apostolos Papakonstantinou (@apapak)

Apostolos is an Adjunct Lecturer at the Cyprus University of Technology and currently, a senior researcher in MRSG and he is conducting his second postdoctoral research in MRSG funded by the Greek State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) on the "Detection and Mapping Plastic Litter in the Coastal Zone Using Unmanned Aerial Systems and Deep Learning Techniques”. He holds a Ph.D. in the field of "Geoinformatics" with specialization in Cartography and scale issues in Geovisualization from the Department of Geography, University of the Aegean. Holds an MSc in "Cultural Informatics and Communication" from the Department of Cultural Informatics and Communication, University of the Aegean, and a degree in Physics from the University of Ioannina.

His research interests include: UAS for mapping spatiotemporal phenomena, UAS in the geovisualization and mapping of coastal environments, and his work combine computational methods and algorithms in monitoring and mapping spatiotemporal phenomena using UAVs.

Mr. Ioannis Moutzouris-Sidiris (@moutzouris)

Ioannis Moutzouris-Sidiris is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of the Aegean and a member of the MRSG. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, an MSc in Hydrology and Water Resources Management, and an MSc in Geography and Applied Geo-information. Ioannis has worked for several companies in the fields of hydrological modeling and environmental monitoring. His research interests include the application of remote sensing algorithms for the calculation of water quality parameters in coastal environments.

Mr. Argyrios Moustakas (@argyrism)

Argyris is currently working as a researcher for Marine Remote Sensing Group (MRSG, University of the Aegean) responsible for providing technical support, designing and installing new equipment for the lab’s UAVs. He holds a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with a Master’s degree in Embedded Systems and Robotics (Meng) from the University of Manchester (thesis: the creation of an autonomous robotic system for removing nuclear waste from Legacy Gloveboxes). For the past two years, Argyris has worked for Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company under the Rise management trainee program. Before that time, Argyris has also worked for a year for MRSG as a UAV engineer. His main research interest is the exploitation of UAV technologies and their applications.

Mr. Spyros Spondylidis

Spyros Spondylidis is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Marine Sciences, University of the Aegean. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Marine Sciences, University of the Aegean, and his Master’s degree in Geography and Geoinformatics in the same University. Currently, he is writing his Ph.D. thesis “Potential Fishing Zone detection with the use of Remote Sensing” and is an active researcher of the Marine Remote Sensing Group specializing in data analysis. His scientific interests involve mainly Remote Sensing and GIS applications including, satellite imagery processing, timeline analysis, ocean color algorithm building, and geospatial data analysis.

Mr. Marios Batsaris (@mbatsaris)

Marios Batsaris (https://mbatsaris.gr) is a Ph.D. candidate in the field of Geographical Analysis and Geo-information. He is currently working as a junior artificial intelligence computer vision developer for the Marine Remote Sensing Group – MRSG. His research interest focus on GIS and Remote Sensing applications, combinatorial optimization, and machine learning
