The Team

Diamond Light Source

Michele Darrow
Development Scientist at TTP Labtech
Michele's research background is in cryo-electron microscopy, image annotation techniques, and protein misfolding disorders. She is excited to use image annotation to answer interesting biological questions and help to build algorithms and software that will make segmenting easier in the future. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, playing with her dogs (Jinx and Charm) and playing video games.

Mark Basham @basham_mark
Senior Software Scientist in the Data Analysis Group
Mark's research background is in 3D volume reconstruction and visualization, specifically on Big Data systems. He is an avid fan of open source software, contributing to many projects such as Savu and Dawn. In his spare time, he enjoys vollunteering his time through outreach activities such as working with the Lego Beamline also on twitter.

Olly King @_OllyK
Data Analysis Scientist
Olly's research background is in biomaterials and protein chemical biology. He traded in life at the lab bench for the world of software development and is now working on extending SuRVoS - software that helps scientists extract information from 3D image data. When not doing this, you can find him running or out with a camera capturing images of his own.

Avery Pennington
Data Analysis Scientist - Machine Vision
Avery's research background is in bio-image analysis, in particular phenotyping root systems. She has worked as a machine learning engineer in the geospatial analytics industry. In addition to subjecting pixels to intense scrutiny she enjoys walking her dog on uneven terrain.

University of Oxford

Mark Boyce
Molecular virologist at the Division of Structural Biology
Mark’s research background is in understanding at the molecular level how viruses take control of host cells and cause them to produce new virus particles. In his free time, he enjoys cinema and visiting nature reserves.

King's College London

Corey Hecksel
EM Scientist at the Centre for Ultrastructural Imaging
Corey specializes in cryo electron microscopy and is interested in using cryo electron microscopy to study macromolecular complexes in cellular environments using a combination of cryo focused ion beam milling and cryo electron tomography. Outside of work he enjoys running and hanging out with friends.

The Zooniverse

Helen Spiers
Postdoctoral Associate in Biomedical Research and Citizen Science
Helen is part of the Zooniverse Team based in Oxford, UK.
