Finished! Looks like this project is out of data at the moment!

Hey Amazonoilers!!! Thank you so much for your help during the last months. Soon we will upload some preliminary results from the data that you helped us to collect.

FAQ

What can I do if I don't know the species in the video?
Click on the 'Looks Like' on top of the list of animals. To make your task easier, we have organized animals by their physical appearance. Once you have selected a group of animals, then you can proceed to identify the species.
If you are not sure of the species, do not worry: just mark the option 'I can't tell' and we will take a look at it. We can also try to identify it together on the 'Talk'.
If, at some point, you think you have chosen the wrong group of animals, just go back and choose another group of animals.

What do I do if the species is not in the list?
It is possible that many more animals than those which are in our list visit the oil spills. If you see an animal which is not in our list, please mark the option ‘A species not in the list’. You can help us more if you let us know which animal it is on the ‘Talk.

What do I do if there is more than one species in one video?
Add multiple annotations if you can see animals of different species in one video. Please do watch the videos throughout: some animals are really shy and only appear at the end.

Why there are empty videos?
The cameras are triggered by heat and movement, and they could be sometimes activated by moving leaves or moving patches of sunlight. If you don't see any animals in the video, just select "Nothing here".

How can I identify the sex of lowland tapir and red brocket deers?
This is a difficult step. Images and detailed information is provided in the field guide (a tab located in the right part of the screen). However, if you still have doubts, please contact us in the Talk, so we can do it together!

How can I identify distinguishable individuals of lowland tapir and red brocket deer?
You should consider that the recorded animal is a distinguishable individual if it shows any unique and permanent characteristic that differenciates the individual from the others. For example, broken horns and ears, deep skin marks, deviated snout or one-eyed animals, among others.

I made a mistake!
If you need to delete an identification while viewing a video, click the "x" next to its icon below the video.

¿Are the date and time always correct?
No, they are not! Sometimes we had some troubles setting the date and time in the camera, but we have written down when the camera was activated, so don't worry about it!

¿Why do you only ask for individual and sexual identification in the cases of deer and tapirs?
Individual and sexual identification are already very difficult tasks for these two species. We did not find any reasonable way to determine the sex of the other species through the videos. Similarly, we think it is really an almost-impossible-task to distinguish between different individuals from the remaining species only helped by these videos.
However, we ask you to identify the individual and the sex of deer and tapir animals, when possible, because this data can give us valuable information about the causes of this behaviour (oil spills ingestion) and its extent. This way, we would be able to answer questions like ¿Are there always the same “oil-addicted” animals eating in oil spills?, ¿are all animals acting like this or are females (or males) more attracted to oil spills? and similar questions.

If the picture quality is too fuzzy to tell what is there, should we mark it as "nothing there" or make a very wild guess?"
Please make a wild guess! Maybe is not as wild as you think 😃 moreover, the same video is analised by several people. If the results differ a lot, we will watch the video again. Thank you so much again!

Getting help
We have prepared some information and photos to help you in the FIELD GUIDE. This information should help you to identify the different species in the area, to distinguish the sex of an individual, and to discern whether an animal is ingesting or not. You can find the field guide in a tab in the right part of the screen.

However, you can use the Zooniverse "Talk" feature to contact with us and ask any other questions you have.

Thank you so much for your time and motivation!
