This project was born out of a desire to better understand the history and evolution of our homes and the neighborhoods that make up the Albemarle County and Charlottesville we know today. Many homes here were constructed between 1897-1968 and contained racially restrictive covenants in their deeds — clauses that prevented African Americans, and sometimes Jews and other specific groups of people, from living there.
This project is examining just how many racially restricted properties there were, exactly where they were, and what their longterm effect has been on our current housing landscape. To do that, we've digitized more than 300,000 pages of property records. We then search each record and upload the properties with racial covenants to this Zooniverse site for your review.
