Q: How long has this project been running?
A: We started this project in 2021 to prototype some camera systems, and we collected lots of data during the summer. We are now processing images collected in the field and training AI models.
Q: What do I do if I make a mistake in one of the workflows?
A: Don't worry, we all make mistakes! You can either go back and change your answer, or make a post in the Talk board "Questions". Be sure to include the subject ID and describe the changes you'd like to make. When we download our data we will do quality control checks and make any needed changes. But remember, multiple people see and identify each card so it's totally fine if you make a mistake!
Q: Why can't a computer do this work?
A: In order for AI to be able to identify objects, it needs to be trained first on already annotated data (i.e. images for which we already know where is the insect, what it is and what it's doing). This is exactly why we need manual annotations; we can then use this AI model to get rid of the many, many images not containing any insect and focus on the interesting stuff.
