FAQ

F.A.Q.

We welcome any and all questions about this project! Some common questions are below.

Q: Why do these forms need to be identified by the different types?
A: Identifying the type of Army form will enable us to divide them into groups for indexing. This will allow us to capture the most complete data possible from each form.

Q: Why can't AI do this task?
A: Because the typewriter text on these forms tends to be blurry, our tests indicate that they cannot always be identified through AI. Therefore, we need humans to help sort the hundreds of thousands of files from this collection.

Q: Why are the back of forms scanned?/They scanned the wrong side!
A: Our digitization vendor was asked to scan the back of form is there was any writing or stamps on it. The front of the form was also scanned.

Q: What is the eventual goal of this project?
A: At the end of this project, we hope to have completely indexed the information from all of the Virginia WWII Separation Notices. This data will be made freely available to the public. The digital collection will be available through the Library of Virginia institutional repository.

Q: How is this work funded?
A: The project is funded through NEH’s Humanities Collections and Reference Resources grant program and, in part, by NEH’s special initiative, A More Perfect Union. This effort will help Americans commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026 by exploring, reflecting on, or telling the stories of our quest for a more just, inclusive, and sustainable society throughout our history.
