FAQ

There are too many cranes in the picture to identify, what do I do?

If you have a hard time drawing lines for all of the cranes because of their number, don't worry, and just identify as much as you can and go to the next picture. Another pair of eyes will also go over that picture later.

I can see cranes and other animals in the background of the picture, but it is too blurry to draw an accurate line, what do I do?

In the case of a picture where you can't clearly draw a line on the individuals, like the example before, please consider the picture as empty and use the "Done" button to go to the next one.

What if I make a mistake?

You made a mistake in the line or forgot some cranes, please do not worry, it can happen. Each picture will be reviewed by multiple people, so mistakes can happen!

Why can't computers do this?

Why not make computers do this task? Yes, machines will but not yet. Existing algorithms are too rough to identify locally-abundant species – We tried and the machine thinks white-naped cranes are hippopotamus! We also tried the crane counting algorithm, which we have been developing with photographs taken by ecologists. But the machine trained with human-produced images was not competent with device-produced images. This means that we need a specific dataset to improve the AI to work better with trail cam images.
