The Team

The Rosalind Franklin Institute

Michele Darrow @msbrhonclif
Head of Data Strategy for Cryo Electron Imaging
Michele's research background is in cryo-electron microscopy, image annotation techniques, and protein misfolding disorders. She is excited to use image annotation to answer interesting biological questions and help to build algorithms and software that will make segmenting easier in the future. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, playing with her dogs (Jinx and Charm) and playing video games.

Mark Basham @markbasham (twitter: @basham_mark)
Director of Artificial Intelligence and Informatics
Mark's research background is in 3D volume reconstruction and visualization, specifically on Big Data systems. He is an avid fan of open source software, contributing to many projects such as Savu and Dawn. In his spare time, he enjoys vollunteering his time through outreach activities such as working with the Lego Beamline also on twitter.

Avery Pennington @avery.pennington
Senior Research Software Engineer
Avery's research background is in bio-image analysis, in particular phenotyping root systems. She has worked as a machine learning engineer in the geospatial analytics industry. In addition to subjecting pixels to intense scrutiny she enjoys walking her dog on uneven terrain.

Patricia Smith @smith_p
Community Manager - Science Scribbler Projects
Patricia's research background is in biomaterials and materials science, in particular the development of artificial skin grafts. She traded in the lab to work more within science communication and outreach. Outside of work she spends most of her hours in the gym or rowing on the river Thames.

Olly King (twitter: @_OllyK)
Data Analysis Scientist
Olly's research background is in biomaterials and protein chemical biology. He traded in life at the lab bench for the world of software development and is now working on extending SuRVoS - software that helps scientists extract information from 3D image data. When not doing this, you can find him running or out with a camera capturing images of his own.

Sian Tedaldi
Outreach Programmes Manager - Department of Physics

Kathryn O'Brien Skerry @kobskerry
Physics Engagement Officer

Several of our team are (or were!) part of the outreach team at the Department of Physics, working on public engagement including Zooniverse projects and delivering the Zooniverse in Schools programme. Here we are at the Inside Diamond Light Source open day in March 2023:
