Hi! I am currently a post-baccalaureate researcher at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and I am researching starburst galaxies with JWST. With your help we can analyze the impact that new JWST data has on our understanding of galaxy evolution and the role of galaxy mergers.
emma_tkEarly results from JWST have shown the chaotic nature and detailed shape and structure of previously unresolved starburst galaxies. With the new and improved resolution of JWST, we are able to uncover more about true nature of these galaxies than we have ever been able to before!
Starburst galaxies are known for having intense amounts of star formation. Intriguingly, there is not yet a consensus as to what causes the starburst phase in an individual galaxy's evolution. Additionally, with new JWST images of many galaxy fields, we're beginning see examples of galaxies that have been previously misclassified -- something we could not have uncovered without this amazing new space observatory.
This is where we come in. Help us determine if previously-identified starburst galaxies are rather newly resolved mergers with JWST!
